It's purpose is to provide a welcoming, creative environment that will promote the arts and technology in Ipswich and beyond.<br />
The WIP co working space will be Ipswich's first collaborative workspace for people to think, work and learn. Although not for exclusive use by those living and working in the creative and technology industries, you will probably find you get more out of it if you have a creative streak, or like being around those who do. The purpose of the WIP space is to provide creatives and technologists with a collaborative work environment where they can feed of each others energy and inspire each other to achieve better, more interesting work. Members can rent studio space, desk space or exhibition space. All of the shared facilities are at your disposal including meeting rooms, break out zones, broadband and print. Photographic/film studios and exhibition or classroom space will be avbailable later in the year.<br />

Collaboration between the arts and technology is not that easy to come by in Ipswich, so we thought we would create some space for it.<br />

Portland, Ore., has had more than its fair share of trouble from the current recession. It has seen the biggest drop in employment of any metro area in the country, with the jobless rate a dismal 12.2% in June.<br />
<br />
Mixed with that gloom, though, are some sunny spots—notably the city's co-working spaces, or shared offices.<br />
<br />

The company reportedly made several business missteps, including its expensive monthly lease.</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">Cubespace's successors say that by balancing real estate costs, unearthing additional revenue streams, and serving individual communities' needs, their co-working spaces will be around for many years to come. Here's a look at three of them:</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Souk: Co-working Basics</strong></div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">The now-defunct Cubespace was<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://images.businessweek.com/ss/07/02/0227_coworking/index.htm" style="color: #007cd5; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;">Portland's first co-working spot</a>, but Souk wasn't far behind. Opened by Julie Duryea in January 2007, the event- and meeting-friendly space caters to what Duryea describes as "varied and colorful a community" as the open-air markets from which Souk takes its name. This broad-market approach has slowly borne fruit: Last year the company broke even, with revenue from memberships ($275 a month, full-time), drop-in desk use ($35 a day), and meetings. While the economic downturn has pinched meeting revenue to the point that the company is likely ro slip back into the red for 2009, Duryea says she's seeing a slight rebound in meeting-space use.</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">For workers, Souk offers most of the standard services of its Portland peers. In addition to the co-working basics—power, Wi-Fi, water, coffee, and snacks—Souk hosts events, workshops, and classes for its members and helps them access local resources. "I can see how it's easier in this city to start up such a thing," says Duryea. "It's more manageable size-wise, and there's a big community of creative class workers."</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">NedSpace: Co-working as an Incubator</strong></div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">Futurist Anthony Townsend told<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><cite style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">BusinessWeek</cite><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/jun2009/id2009061_377716.htm" style="color: #007cd5; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;">in June</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>that the explosion in Web working is creating new kinds of "knowledge ecosystems," and an ecosystem is a good metaphor for the model being pursued by Josh Friedman and Mark Grimes. The founders of aix-month-old NedSpace aim to separate their co-working space from the Portland pack with a focus on fostering collaboration among high-growth, early-stage startups rather than independent contractors and freelancers. Currently, NedSpace has 40 companies (encompassing 64 individuals) sharing one 7,500-square-foot space, with a mixture of open-area and dedicated desks ($275-$375 a month), as well as open- and closed-door offices ($575-$975 a month).</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">In addition to memberships, NedSpace generates revenue from partnerships and sponsorships. Friedman says he's negotiating with a wireless Internet provider to sponsor free bandwidth for NedSpace; when companies "graduate" out of the co-working space into offices of their own, the provider would offer discount services for their new location. The model is an ingenious way to attract companies that hope to someday graduate, while also appealing to sponsors who want early access to future paying customers (sort of a B2B version of advertising to children).</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">Friedman, who says access to investment capital is a major limitation of doing business in Portland, also hopes to attract investor partners to NedSpace. Both Friedman and Grimes have experience starting and raising funding for businesses, and Friedman says they have successfully connected four member startups with angel investors. "I know who works hard," he says.</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">According to Friedman, the company has been profitable since its third month and will open its second Portland location in August. NedSpace is also seeking to expand its efforts further, with plans to open a third Portland location and a Seattle space in the months ahead. In the future, Friedman envisions NedSpace as a YCombinator-meets-co-working arrangement and is currently seeking an Entrepreneur-in-Residence to staff the Seattle location and provide advice to member companies.</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">The Hive: Co-working as Culture</strong></div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">The latest addition to the Portland co-working scene, the Hive, is set to open on Sept. 1. Other co-working spaces are independent businesses, but the Hive is part of the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://leftbankproject.com/" style="color: #007cd5; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;">Leftbank Project</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>building in which it's located. A new green building in Portland's Rose Quarter district, the Leftbank features a wide range of office spaces for sustainability-minded businesses, such as software startup<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/07/07/with-social-media-fmyi-makes-enterprise-collaboration-pay" style="color: #007cd5; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;">FMYI</a>,<a href="http://leftbankproject.com/2008/07/upright-brewing-company/" style="color: #007cd5; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;">Upright Brewing</a>, consulting firm<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://www.bluetreestrategies.com/" style="color: #007cd5; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: underline;">Blue Tree Strategies</a>, and several green-design firms. The building is a veritable rabbit warren of like-minded businesses, and the Hive is an attempt to capitalize on that, says small-business consultant Christian Allen.</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">"It wasn't started as a business idea; it was more of, how can we feed this vision? How can we create more community?" says Allen. "I think it will definitely be challenging." Still, the Hive is well-positioned to compete in the Portland market. It provides the basic co-working amenities, with a green twist and competitive rates: Individual dedicated desks, which include access to community tables and conference rooms, go for $350 a month.</div><div style="font-size: 1.4em; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px;">Allen says the community will also play a large role in establishing a long-term business model for the Hive. It's so drab there's nothing more to say about it, which is why the odds of finding Gruber there are slim.<br />
<br />
Instead, Gruber often works at Tryst in Adams Morgan, at Liberty Tavern in Clarendon, at a Starbucks, in hotel lobbies, at the Library of Congress, on the Bolt Bus to New York or, as he did last week, beside the rooftop pool of the Hilton on Embassy Row. Gruber and Web entrepreneur Jen Consalvo turned up late one morning, opened their Mac laptops, connected to WiFi and began working. A few feet away, the pool's water shimmered like hand-blown glass.<br />
<br />
"I like the breeze," Consalvo said, working all the while.<br />
<br />
Gruber and Consalvo are digital nomads. They work -- clad in shorts, T-shirts and sandals -- wherever they find a wireless Web connection to reach their colleagues via instant messaging, Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and occasionally by voice on their iPhones or Skype. As digital nomads, experts say, they represent a natural evolution in teleworking. The Internet let millions of wired people work from home; now, with widespread WiFi, many have cut the wires and left home (or the dreary office) to work where they please -- and especially around other people, even total strangers.<br />
<br />
For nomads, the benefits are both primitive and practical.<br />
<br />
Primitive: Tom Folkes, an artificial intelligence programmer, worked last week at the Java Shack in Arlington County because he's "an extrovert working on introvert tasks. If I'm working at home by myself, I am really hating life. I need people." He has a coffee shop rotation. "I spread my business around."<br />
<br />
Practical: Marilyn Moysey, an Ezenia employee who sells virtual collaboration software, often works at Panera Bread near her home in Alexandria even though she has an office in the "boondocks." Why? "Because there is no hope for the road system around here," she said. Asked where her co-workers were, Moysey said, "I don't know, because it doesn't matter anymore."<br />
<br />
Nomad life is already evolving. Nomads who want the feel of working with officemates have begun co-working in public places or at the homes of strangers. They work laptop-by-laptop in living rooms and coffee shops, exchanging both idle chitchat and business advice with people who all work for different companies. The gatherings are called jellies, after a bowl of jelly beans the creators were eating when they came up with the name.<br />
<br />
Although the number of digital nomads is intrinsically difficult to measure -- they are constantly in motion and difficult to pin down for polling -- evidence of a real shift in where Americans work is mounting. Dell reports that its digital nomad Web site is getting tens of thousands of hits a month. Panera, a popular spot for people working wirelessly, logs 1.5 million WiFi sessions a month.<br />

One only needs to visit Tryst, a popular coffeehouse on 18th Street NW, to see dozens of people spending money on food and drinks in exchange for the privilege of setting up a day office at a table there. Cafe owners love the trend. "If there was nobody in here, people would say 'That place is no good,' " said Dale Roberts, who owns the Java Shack. "It feeds on itself. If you go to a movie theater and see a long line, people want to see that movie. It's the same thing for a coffee shop."<br />

One of the inalienable rights of digital nomads is starting their workday well after many of their colleagues out at the cubicle farm have spent hours preparing for and getting to their workstations. Last week, Gruber edged into his workweek from home at 9:15 a.m., posting to his Twitter page, "It's Monday, another busy week ahead!" Twenty-two minutes later, he posted a picture of his breakfast: two eggs, sunny side up. They looked delicious, not a single crack in the yolk. It wasn't until about 11 that Gruber, a 31-year-old product strategist for AOL, arrived at the Hilton pool with Consalvo, his business partner.<br />
<br />
She used to work for AOL -- during the stock option boom, she owned a boat she named Options -- but now the 37-year-old is creating a Web startup with Gruber called Shiny Heart Ventures. Definition of shiny objects: their equipment. Between the two of them, they travel with more than $10,000 in gear. They lug laptops, iPhones, back-up hard drives, power supplies and too many USB adapters to tally. "We are like good little Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts -- always prepared," Consalvo said.<br />

Gruber worked on AOL products, including the company's instant messaging system. He and Consalvo also chatted about coding for their Web site, dealt with contractors and sent lots of e-mail. When Consalvo won a small victory, hooking someone important to work on a project with her, she feted herself by dipping her feet in the pool. The only stress all day was a weird mix of music piped in to entertain poolgoers. Frank Sinatra followed by Beyonce does not constitute optimal working conditions.<br />

Consalvo's father, a Maine lobster fisherman, is skeptical that lolling by the pool can constitute a workday. "I don't think he thinks that any of this work is real," Consalvo said. "But why wouldn't you work this way if you could?"<br />

The attraction of working poolside is obvious, but why would an employer let workers pick venues that shout leisure rather than productivity? "It's a win-win," said Mary Barnes, Gruber's boss at AOL, in an instant message chat. "Frank is happy doing what he loves and from a business perspective, we gain valuable industry knowledge, contacts and insights." Barnes works closely with Gruber to measure his contributions, and both expect to see ever more nomads: "The younger workforce will demand it. That's how they live."<br />

Carsten Sorensen, a London School of Economics professor who studies nomads, said people working away from an office often feel pressure to work harder to protect their freedom. This can make working as a nomad "both heaven and hell," he said, even leading to burnout.<br />

At Buzz Bakery in Alexandria last week, half a dozen people assembled for a jelly organized by Lacey Hopkins, a technical writer. She started co-working once a week after working alone at home left her strangely tired at day's end. "Extroverted people like me get their energy from other people," she said.</span><br />

Ads on the wall at Tryst offer space to the fully-evolved nomad who doesn't want a formal office but still wants a community of people to swap ideas with -- and a fax machine. Members pay $235 a month to work in a communal room -- no desk included -- or $575 for a desk. Users include designers, software startup entrepreneurs, nonprofit group staffers and an importer of Chilean wine.<br />

Gruber and Consalvo intend to remain "location-independent" throughout their work lives. "In real estate, the emphasis is always put on 'location, location, location!' and thanks to ever-evolving technology, we can now be productive from almost any location," they wrote on their Web site. "And while we understand that there is no place like home, we like to think we have many homes -- the primary one being the World Wide Web."</span><br />

The Angebilt is a historic building in downtown Orlando, constructed between 1921 and 1923. It is listed in the city’s historical registry. When finished in 1923 as a hotel, The Angebilt Hotel was also the home of the first radio station in Orlando - WDBO. Also named for the phrase “Way Down By Orlando.”<br />
The building was designed by the architect Murray S. King who was also Florida’s first registered architect. King gave the building a 20th century commercial style.<br />

The original owner was Joseph Fenner Ange who moved to Orlando in 1913 from Martin Co., North Carolina. Ange sold his interest in the building two months after the opening. In November 1924 a group of Orlando businessmen purchased the hotel.<br />

The new Angebilt was totally renovated in 1999 into upscale office space.<br />

C4 Workspace, a co-working site, opened this month at 108 King William. It caters to consultants, freelancers, home-based business owners and others in search of a conference room, desk, electricity and a place to network with others.<br />
“We're trying to create a big office environment for single workers,” said Todd O'Neill, who launched C4 Workspace along with his wife, Debbie Curtis, and business partner, Perla Escobar, on June 5.<br />
Throughout San Antonio, ad hoc co-work spaces have sprouted up in coffee shops, bookstores, libraries and restaurants, but this is one of the city's first dedicated business spaces designed for freelancers or telecommuters.<br />
More than a year ago, O'Neill, who runs his own consulting business, Doing Media, started weekly co-working sessions on Tuesdays at La Taza Coffeehouse. He did it to test if people wanted a full-time co-working site. When he discovered the need existed, he began to hunt for permanent co-working office space.<br />
O'Neill is at the forefront of a co-working movement. Today, more than 150 co-working sites exist in the United States and dozens more have taken root in foreign countries such as Mexico, Australia, Saudi Arabia, India and China, according to a Wiki Web site on co-working.<br />
“Whether you're a creative class person or a social media maven, you can benefit from being in a dedicated co-working environment,” O'Neill said.<br />
Andrew Guajardo, an intern-architect with G.A. Architect, designed the interior of the 3,100-square-foot building. It features open space with a row of offices on one side, a bar and kitchen in the back and a couple of private telephone booths. With gray concrete floors, white walls, blue walls and a ceiling painted black with exposed silver air ducts, the space feels airy and is a bit noisy. Ikea desks, chairs and sofa serve as the office décor, and two metal sculptures by San Antonio artist Troy Waddell give it a hip, modern look.<br />
“I love the colors. It's calming, relaxing and soothing,” said Colleen Pence, who runs Social Butterfly, a social media consulting company. “It strikes the right emotional chord.”<br />
Normally, it costs $150,000 to design a co-working space, but C4 did it for a fraction of that cost by relying on friends and the founders to do most of the project themselves, Guajardo said. He now rents a desk full time at the center. He's got his MacBook Pro, wireless mouse and iPhone.<br />
“That's all I need. I can work from anywhere,” Guajardo said. “The attraction here is being around the other creative people.”<br />
Most of the time, Pence works out of her house on the North Side, but she's trying out the C4 Workspace this week. She thinks it might make a good place to meet with clients.<br />
“Before this, I was meeting in coffeehouses and restaurants,” she said.<br />
C4 — which stands for collaboration, cooperation, community and co-working — offers daily desk rental for $20, and part-time desks for $150 and full-time desks $280 to $550 monthly. C4 also rents out its conference room and community space for meetings, workshops, film screenings, art displays and other events. It does supply a fax machine, printer and copier, but requires co-workers to bring their own computers, cell phones and other equipment.<br />
Already, C4 has 35 members who pay between $25 and $50 annually to belong to the business. The first membership meeting is tonight.<br />
If the co-working business takes off at the King William site, O'Neill would like to replicate it in other parts of the city.<br />
“This is the second wave of co-working,” O'Neill said. “We created this space as a means of economic development.”</span><br />

OpenSpace will offer various levels of hourly membership options allowing for one-day stop-ins, occasional use, regular use, and shared memberships. We’ll also offer plenty of conference room space, complete with A/V and catering options, for those local VA businesses looking for off-site meeting space. We’re also very interested in making connections with national and international coworking spaces who want to participate in the Coworking Visa program or just want general recommendations.
